The historic Hickory Flat Gym, originally built around 1950 by volunteers using an on-site sawmill, has been carefully restored to preserve its character while meeting modern standards. The facility underwent a $1.85 million renovation that included new interior and exterior walls, a new roofing system, full insulation, a new HVAC system, structural improvements, updated utilities, and enhanced sidewalks and landscaping.
Completed in June 2022, the Hickory Flat Gym now blends historic charm with modern function and continues to serve as a proud landmark in Cherokee County. History Cherokee recently awarded a Historic Preservation Award to Cherokee County for its efforts in restoring the Hickory Flat Gymnasium, recognizing the county’s commitment to preserving local history.
